In our Science topic on Sound, we have been exploring the question, "How would you design a musical instrument that could change pitch and volume?"
We found out that sound travels through the vibration of particles in solids, liquids and gases and were surprised to discover that sound can travel best through solids. We tested this by putting our ears against a metal railing and by someone banging the railing at the far end. To learn about pitch, we explored playing different instruments and examined how the different high and low sounds were made. We investigated patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it by hitting drums with counters on top. We are going to use our knowledge to design musical instruments that are able to change pitch and volume.
Did you know that you can't hear anything in space because there is no air for the sound to travel through?
