I have been a governor now for 6 years. This last year, I took on the role of Chair of Governors. The Governing Body has gone from strength to strength in the last year. Working as a team, we support and challenge the Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team, and staff as they strive for the best possible education, learning environment and future prospects for children in our school.

It is a rewarding role and I am humbled to be associated with the fantastic teaching that I have observed benefiting many hundreds of children in our community.

I am looking forward to this coming year, as I know that we will continue with outstanding improvement in our school. Getting the children ready for a bright and happy future.

Upon leaving Ilfracombe Church of England Junior School in 2012, after 23 happy years as a teacher and then Year Head, I was really pleased when the opportunity arose to serve as a governor in this very special school. Hopefully, my teaching experience and working knowledge of the school allow me to make a positive contribution to the ongoing success and achievements of the children and staff.

I have been a parent governor for the past 5 years at Ilfracombe Junior School. During this time I have seen my children flourish and I am extremely proud to be part of school where every child and staff member are valued and respected. The school is also forward thinking and creative in how it meets each child's needs.

I chose to be a parent governor as I wanted to be part of an organisation where I could share my skills and experience from previously working in the NHS and now currently co-running a local business. There are parallels between my work life and school life, though I appreciate running a school is a lot harder!

I will continue to offer my objective support and assistance whilst my second child remains at the school and I hope we can work towards achieving outstanding in all areas of the school.

I have a love of ceramics, crafts and reading, all of which I do in my spare time, in total contrast to my day job, which is data within Secondary Education. I am passionate about the area we live in and think that local community is very important. In becoming a governor for the school I hope that I can make a positive contribution to what is already a great local school.

I was born and brought up in South London and have lived in Ilfracombe for twenty-five years. I was lucky enough to have a very good experience of state education. The schools I attended were places of safety, respect and happiness; they had high expectations and encouraged personal development in the widest sense. As a teacher of secondary English for over thirty years (first in some very tough schools in London, then in Barnstaple) I have tried to provide the same opportunities for my own pupils.

Since leaving teaching I have been ordained as a priest in the Church of England (I am presently the Curate of Holy Trinity and St Peter’s). Returning to education as a pupil rather than a teacher was a very useful experience! I am delighted to become a Foundation Governor at our school and to participate in its work for the best possible development of each of our children. As a member of the Ethos Committee I will seek to promote the relationship between the school and our local Christian communities.

I hope that our Living and Learning Festival is bigger, better and even more fabulous this year and I believe it will be with such talented children and staff! My favourite children’s book is "Kensuke’s Kingdom." It's an amazing adventure in which a young boy is shipwrecked on an island. Here, he comes into contact with an orang-utan and Kensuke, an honourable, Japanese Doctor and survivor from World War 11. A beautiful connection grows between the three of them as they survive life on the island together. At this moment in time I am proud of learning to play the ukulele. I can now play "Fly to the Moon," "Hallelujah," "Will you love me tomorrow" and "Kum-ba-ya," although Mrs Darke has told me that she does not easily recognise them!

I'm really looking forward to the possibility of our school team winning the North Devon Tag Rugby festival this year (as well as improving my golf game but this might be a bit harder).

I love to read and my favourite book has to be 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes - it has a great twist at the end! I am always proud of how hard the pupils in year 6 work and also whenever my football team wins - Come on you Spurs!

Jenny Pollard

Clerk to Governors

1) To continue to be as happy in life.

2) Favourite children's book - "Wind in the Willows"

3) I am most proud of my three children - all three of them are so different in their educational, recreational and social skills - but with encouragement and support from me, they each are beginning to thrive in their own ways and become their own person.

I have been a Church of England minister for forty years, working for the majority of that time in the East Midlands, where I spent over 20 years as a school governor in two Church primary schools, and around half of that time as chairman of governors. In 2009 I moved to Ilfracombe to be the Vicar of St Philip & St James Church (popularly known as Pip & Jim’s), and am also taking over responsibility for leading the Anglican churches in Combe Martin and Berrynarbor in 2016. In this school I lead Collective Worship for year 3 once a week and, as an associate governor on the Ethos Committee, will work to help and support the school and reinforce its links with local churches. I took over responsibility for leading the Anglican churches in Combe Martin and Berrynarbor in 2016.

I'd like to make a garden chair from the sycamore branches in my garden.

My favourite children's book is George's Marvellous Medicine, very mischievous and funny.

I am still very proud of getting the largest array of solar pv panels in Devon for our school.

I am really excited to be working in year 6 this year, we're a great team with a lot of energy. I'm looking forward to our fantastic topics, especially the Rain forest and our trip to the Eden Project.

My favourite book has always been Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I have a real sweet tooth so the idea of being in a factory surrounding by chocolate and sweets really appeals to me.

Over the past two years I have discovered a love for cycling. Every Saturday my sister and I take to the roads, rain or shine, and power up and down the many hills around North Devon. I was very proud last year when we took part in a cycling sportive and completed 100km!

I was a Governor for 10 years and served on a number of committees over that period, taking a particular interest in aspects of the curriculum and the children's achievements. I started as a governor because I think we should all have an interest in the future of our young community. It is for this reason that, though I have stepped down as a governor, I continue to serve the school as an Associate Member.
